Dr David Butler is a Senior Renewable Energy Engineer with CSIRO Energy. His current work focuses on larger isolated power systems and the safe integration of distributed energy resources into electricity distribution networks.
David’s experience spans the entire electricity value chain, including generation, networks, policy, retail and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). He has spent 15 years working on megawatt-scale isolated power systems across Australia and the Pacific. His work includes leading high-renewable microgrid projects in Tasmania and South Australia, designing one of the world’s first dynamic operating envelopes for rooftop solar in the Cook Islands, and developing renewable energy roadmaps for utilities and governments in the Cook Islands, Vanuatu and Hawaiʻi.
While working at Tasmania’s network utility, David developed its first Distribution System Operator strategy. He has also led numerous utility capability-building workshops with diverse groups.
